Wine Appreciation Through Education
Personal Background
The term Oenophile comes from the ancient Greek: Oenos for wine, and philos for lover. Although the Concise Oxford defines an Oenophile as "a connoisseur of wine", I prefer the romance of the original Greek connotation. The French like to use the term "amateur", which means "one who loves". So I too consider myself to be a lover of wines -- an amateur rather than a connoisseur.

My professional background is rather varied, beginning in the arts (music) followed by stints as college instructor, computer consultant, and now, writer and editor. Although my interest in wine is comparatively recent, I have availed myself of wine courses, a host of books, tastings in the hundreds, and the patience and good will of wine writers and wine experts such as I have had the good fortune to encounter.

Today I concentrate my efforts on wine writing and education. As well as hosting this website, I publish an educational wine newsletter and am a member of the Wine Writers' Circle of Canada, and also serve as their webmaster. But my favourite activity is conducting wine tastings, where I am able to share my enthusiasm and knowledge in a relaxed and fun setting.
